Some quotes about Chile

I am reading abook from the 1960's called Inside South America. It is actually a really interesting view on South America, espeically Chile, since eit was written so long ago. In fact, it was written before the whole Pinochet nightmare. But still, 40 years has not changed everything. Here are some quotes from the book that still hold true about Chile today:
"Twenty six hundred miles long,it has a longer Pacific coastline than the United Stqates, and is never broader than 220 miles; the averge width is only about 125 miles, and yet is covers a totaly area as big as Texas."

"Chilenos are notorious for liking to stay up all night... I would ask desperatly, as we headed home at 2 am or later in each case, "When to Chileans sleep?" Answer: "Sundays." "

"Chile is the one country where it is impossible to be late for anything. Dinner is difficult to procure in a hotel before 10pm or later, which can also happen in Spain, Russia, and Eastern Europe, but not with quite the Chilean nonchalance."

"In opulent contrast (to Northern CHile) is Central Valley South of the desert, the saddle of the country, which strikingly resembles Central Valley in California."

"They (the Chilean indigenous people) were not, as a matter of fact, finally subdued in the Chilean south until 1883, and their claim is that they are the only South American Indians who never surrendered; they simply decided to stop fighting."

"There is no false pride or xenophobia, but the one thing that seems to strike a spark is dislike of Argentina."

"Finally one must mention a factor which no anthropologist or sociologist has ever been able to explain satisfactorily- that Chilean women are just about the prettiest in the world."

These quotes, although written over 40 years ago, still hold true today (especially the one about the pretty women here). I just thought I would share someone else's thoughts on this country.
If you want to read more from this book it is by John Gunther, and as said earlier, it is titled Inside South America. The chapter these exerts are taken from is "More Complexities in Chile".
P.S.- Speaking of Argentina and Chile's love/hate relationship, AShlee and I are headed over to Argentina Friday night to renew our visas and buy some more winter clothes. YEAH!!!

Hey becka!

i hope your having an absolutly beautiful day! hmm right now just wrapping up AP crap and so forth, for my senior project, i am required to get a letter from a coworker/friend, we have to do scrap/memory books about well ourlives, so i was wondering if you could write me a letter, written To me, so like "dear emerald" not "to whom it may concern" and yeah, just write about memories and anything else tha we share or that you have noticed about me..and so forth. well the deadline for my project is may 30th, so if you could send it before the 25th that would be fantastic, of course, if you can't do it, i totally understand, but i'd like to know either way, so that i can plan accordingly. i didn't feell like asking the bingo hall people..cause well..yeah..no. alright then, back to work i go. miss ya much!

a good sign

I live near a long thin park called Parque Forestal. It's really quite a nice park and it has a long stretch of a lane for riding bikes or jogging. And since I have a fear of riding bikes in this city, I jog. It's really pleasent. I usually listen to radioDisney on my mp3 player and jog along to Jonas Brothers, Beyonce, or Julieta Venegas. Great stuff. Yesterday on my jog I noticed that the trees were beginning to change. Fall has finally arrived and I am glad for the change. But as I was jogging through the falling leaves, I began to think about how much I like fall. And I had this special moment when I realized that I want to be here in Santiago, jogging through this park for many falls to come. After the past few weeks of cultural adjustment being a little more painful than normal, this was a nice thought to have.

la musica de chile

For a moment I would liek to ponder the music of Chile. You see, I listen to just about everything (except non-live jazz). Even country, although in this category I limit myself to Dixie Chicks and The Judds (only the old stuff). Here in Chile there is really only a few types of music. One, the corny romantic music that belongs on programs like "Delilah at night". Being the hopeless romantic that I am, I love this type of music. Another type of music is Reggaton (not sure about the spelling, but do I ever spell words correctly?). This is Latin America´s response to Hip Hop. Very good for dancing. I also love the fact that most Reggaton is in Spanglish, my favorite language. There is this other type of music that I like to call the "Corny Electric Piano Musica". Too corny for me and I can only take so much electric piano in one song. I am amazed at how much Englsih music is played here. And people sing to it. they actually know the words, but they have no clue what t

murderous thoughts for cats

I got home from work today, exhausted, only to face the horrible whining of the neighborhood cats outside my window. They used to be really loud, and then in the cold of the winter they disappeared. But now they seem to have returned in full force. I sure hope I can sleep tonight!
